Bitzer Scroll and Refrigeration Compressor Buying Checklist: Heat Exchanger Basics for Non-Engineers

Use this checklist if you're about to order a Bitzer refrigeration compressor or condensing unit and you're not a refrigeration engineer. I'm an office administrator for a cold storage company, and I manage equipment purchases—roughly $400,000 annually across 15 vendors. I report to operations and finance, which means I care about smooth flow and compliance as much as the price. This is the practical list I wish someone had handed me in 2020.

First, the basic question that shows up in every search: what is a heat exchanger? A heat exchanger moves heat from one fluid to another without letting the fluids mix. In refrigeration, the evaporator pulls heat out of the cold space into the refrigerant, and the condenser pushes heat from the refrigerant to the outside air or water. That's the exchange. If you started that search and saw an incense burner in the results, ignore it. An incense burner is not a heat exchanger. A Lasko heater is not a heat exchanger either—it's a forced-air space heater with a resistive element. Neither one belongs in a refrigeration system.

The Checklist

This is not a theory. Every step below comes from an order I processed, a service call I approved, or a mistake I had to explain to finance. Do these checks before you send a PO.

Step 1: Write down the operating condition before you look at the compressor

Capacity numbers are meaningless without operating conditions. The same Bitzer refrigeration compressor rated at 20°F evaporating and 110°F condensing can move dramatically less refrigerant at -20°F evaporating. You need these inputs: refrigerant, evaporating temperature, condensing temperature, ambient temperature, voltage and phase, enclosure type, and control voltage. Include the refrigerant type explicitly. A compressor made for R-448A is not necessarily compatible with R-290 or ammonia.

What most people don't realize is that the same model may exist in several refrigerant versions. Don't assume that a 'Bitzer' label covers that. Check the data sheet.

Step 2: Choose the compressor family: scroll or screw

Bitzer scroll compressors are quiet, simple, and a good fit for many medium and low-temp applications. For larger loads, a screw compressor or a twin-screw parallel unit may be a better match. We use a Bitzer scroll on a 10 hp walk-in freezer and a screw compressor on the blast freezer because the screw handles part load without short-cycling.

Everything I'd read about scrolls said they are simpler and almost always the right choice for smaller loads. In practice, for our blast freezer, the screw was the better call. Its capacity control let us hold temperature more evenly, and the energy profile over the day was better than a single oversized scroll would have been. It's tempting to think a compressor is just a compressor, but the load profile matters more than the name.

Step 3: Get the full data sheet, not just the model number

The model number in a listing is the beginning, not the end. Search for the exact Bitzer model on the manufacturer's site and download the technical data sheet. Check the performance table at your operating conditions, electrical data, sound pressure, oil charge, and mounting dimensions. If a seller can't provide a data sheet, treat that as a red flag.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: a listing called 'Bitzer refrigeration compressor' may include only the bare compressor. The condensing unit or parallel rack could use a third-party condenser, receiver, oil separator, and control panel. That's fine if you know what you're buying. It's not fine if you expect a complete system. A lesson learned the hard way.

Step 4: Check the heat exchanger match

The compressor is the heart of the system, but it needs an evaporator and a condenser sized to the same duty. The most common order error I've dealt with is matching by pipe size instead of capacity. The right way is to use the capacity tables from the heat exchanger manufacturer. At minimum, confirm that the condenser or evaporator is rated for the same refrigerant and the same operating range as the compressor.

If the condenser is too small, head pressure rises, efficiency drops, and the compressor runs hotter than it should. If the evaporator is too small, the room won't reach setpoint. Neither problem shows up in the purchase order; both show up in the first week of operation.

And to answer the earlier phrase again: this is exactly what 'what is a heat exchanger' means in practice. It's the coils on both sides of the compressor, doing the heat movement. Not an incense burner, not a Lasko heater.

Step 5: Confirm power, controls, and accessories before delivery

A compressor model number does not include your control sequence. You still have to confirm voltage tolerance, start method, pressure switch ranges, fan direction, crankcase heater, service valves, and the controller brand. This is where most of our failures happened.

We didn't have a formal spec-capture process, and it cost us when a custom rack arrived with pressure switches set for a different range than our facility needed. It took three service calls to sort out. After that, I created a one-page spec sheet with every parameter the vendor has to confirm before production. The third time we ordered the wrong spec, I finally made the sheet. Should have done it after the first time.

Step 6: Plan for lead times and spare parts

If you need a unit in two weeks, don't assume a fully assembled condensing unit is sitting on a shelf. Some Bitzer models have standard lead times of eight to twelve weeks depending on the market (we saw this in 2024, at least). The 'expedited' option on one of our orders added 50% to the cost (which, honestly, felt excessive).

Keep a few critical spares in stock if downtime hurts: oil filters, pressure transducers, and a controller fuse or two. Waiting for a spare is waiting with a warm walk-in.

Step 7: Validate the vendor's paperwork and after-sales support

This is the step an engineer would never think to include, but it's the one finance cares about. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I approved a lower quote for a Bitzer scroll from a new vendor. The unit arrived with no usable paperwork—no serial number, no model number, just a PDF invoice that didn't match the purchase order. Finance rejected the expense, and I had to cover the cost from the department budget. Not ideal, but workable. Now I verify invoicing capability, tax registration, warranty terms, and a clear returns policy before placing any order.

The lowest quoted price is not the lowest total cost. Add the time you'll spend correcting invoices, the risk of an unsupported unit, and the cost of a service call if something doesn't line up.

Common Mistakes and Final Notes

I've made most of these myself. Some are compressor-specific, some are just buying mistakes.

  • Don't trust a photo. A picture of a clean Bitzer condensing unit can be a stock image, not the actual model you're ordering.
  • Don't ask for 'the heat exchanger' without saying where it goes. Condenser, evaporator, and oil cooler are all heat exchangers.
  • Don't assume a condensing unit is plug-and-play. Most still need electrical, refrigerant, and control wiring done by a licensed tech.
  • Don't buy an incense burner when you meant an evaporator coil. And don't buy a Lasko heater when you meant a condenser. It sounds absurd, but I've seen both searches pull up the wrong product.

One authority note: in North America, compressor capacity and power ratings are commonly tested under AHRI Standard 540. When a vendor quotes capacity, ask whether the number is at AHRI conditions or at custom conditions. Comparing a custom condition number to an AHRI number is comparing apples and oranges.

None of this requires an engineering degree. It requires a checklist and a little patience. If you're an administrator like me, this list will save you from the three-service-call problem and a finance rejection. And if your search history now contains 'bitzer scroll' plus 'incense burner,' you have my sympathy. It beats typing 'what is a heat exchanger' for the fifth time.
