Application Engineering Examples

Representative project configurations demonstrating how compressor selection matches specific industry operating requirements.

Seafood Processing Facility — Blast Freezing System

A 12,000 square meter seafood processing plant in the Gulf Coast region required a blast freezing system capable of reducing product core temperature from +15 degrees C to -18 degrees C within 4 hours, processing 8 tons per cycle. The engineering team specified a cascade refrigeration system using four semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors on the low-temperature stage (R-744) paired with two screw compressors on the high-temperature stage (R-717). The system achieved a combined COP of 1.85 at the -40 degrees C evaporating condition, with total installed cooling capacity of 320 kW. Commissioning data confirmed that product freezing times met the 4-hour target across 95% of production cycles during the first 6 months of operation.

Data Center Campus — Variable Load Chiller Plant

A 15 MW data center campus in the mid-Atlantic region needed a chiller plant upgrade to accommodate fluctuating server loads ranging from 30% to 85% of design capacity on a 24-hour cycle. The design incorporated six variable-speed screw compressors with VFD drives, staged in a primary-variable-flow chilled water configuration. Each compressor modulates from 25% to 100% capacity with published IPLV of 0.42 kW/TR, compared to 0.58 kW/TR for the existing fixed-speed units. The retrofit reduced annualized cooling energy consumption by 28% measured over the first 12-month operating period, verified through the building management system energy metering.

Operating Boundary Conditions & Application Limits

Every compressor platform operates within defined performance boundaries. Specifying outside these limits requires application engineering review.

Ambient Temperature Limits

Air-cooled condensing units are rated for ambient temperatures up to 48 degrees C. Above this threshold, capacity derating of 5 to 15% applies depending on the condensing temperature setpoint. Operations in desert climates or enclosed rooftop installations exceeding 52 degrees C require water-cooled or evaporative condenser configurations.

Refrigerant Charge Constraints

A3-classified natural refrigerants (R-290) are subject to maximum charge limits per IEC 60335-2-89. For scroll compressors in commercial applications, this typically restricts cooling capacity to 25 kW per circuit in occupied spaces. Higher capacities require either secondary loop systems with reduced charge or machine room installations per EN 378.

Altitude & Voltage Tolerances

Standard motor ratings apply at altitudes up to 1,000 meters above sea level. Above this elevation, motor current derating of 1% per 100 meters is required. Voltage tolerance is plus or minus 10% of nameplate at 50/60 Hz. VFD-equipped models require clean power supply with THD below 5% to prevent premature drive component failure.
